Work inspiration: Jan 1-7

I’ve done a photo-a-day on my other blog for 6 years. If you think that after 6 years the inspiration would be flagging a little, you’d be right. I sometimes use the prompts from Fat Mum Slim as a way to get through the doldrums, and this month I combined her prompts with brewing. Plum Crazy

Plum Crazy is my first recipe at Magnotta, for their newly-launched growler line. I wanted to do a nice fruit beer for summer, and decided to do a cream ale with plums. Why plums? Because I didn’t see very many plum beers out there. I envisioned a nice, light, slightly fruity beer in a lovely shade of pink/purple, something refreshing for a summer day. On the other side of the desk

Well this is fun. No, really, it is! I was given the chance to sit on the other side of the desk at Niagara College and teach two courses, first semester Ingredients and second semester Sensory. I was reminded of how much I really like teaching. I wish I had more time to prepare the lessons and get marking done but am still working five days at Magnotta. I do love being back at Niagara. I keep expecting my classmates to walk around a corner though, and wish they were still around to go for beer or ice cream.

Ten things I learned working in the teaching brewery for two weeks.

I am way more out or shape than I’d thought. Back to the Fitbit and the gym. Custom insoles are my friend. Steel-toed rubber boots are my friend. Aleve is my friend. Self-doubt creeps in at the oddest times. Every machine has a quirk. Once you know that quirk, you will be one efficient badass on that machine. However, getting to know that quirk can be time-consuming and irksome. Help is there for the asking. Cleaning never ends. Never. Sampling beer at 9am is part of the bottlers job.
