I’m a BJCP Judge!

It took all of two days from receiving my BJCP test results to get some judging gigs. I needed just one more experience point to get to the Certified level. I was able to get in on one of the judging nights for the Ontario Brewing Awards, and judged Bohemian Pils, Amber Lager and Vegetable categories. The next weekend, I went with Eric Cousineau, Brandi Lee MacDonald and Victor North to Buffalo to judge the Amber Waves of Grain competition. What happens when you get 600-ish women together to drink beer?

What happens is a very chill and relaxed event. No drama. No fights, no shrieking, no shenanigans. Just some lovely and wonderful women enjoying and talking about beer, far from the male gaze. The beer at this event was pretty delicious. My favourite was the Bonfire Porter from Muddy York – their regular porter with cocoa nibs, cinnamon and vanilla beans. Jenn Reinhart’s coconut porter was very good as well, and I was intrigued by the flavours the spent gin botanicals gave to Revel’s Spirit of the Woods cider.

Cask Days 2015

Three sessions (one as volunteer, two as drinker). I tried 43 different casks according to my notes. Ow. Highlights: the white chocolate stout and blueberry sour by Blood Brothers in Toronto. I might have to venture to the west end more often. Hanlan’s Point, a bourbon barrel porter with coconut and coffee, a collab between Great Lakes and Bar Hop Trou de Diable’s Ze Blend on whiskey oak chips, a most delicious sour.
