Days 55 to 59

The week ran away without me again, what can I say. It wasn’t helped by being sick on Thursday and then having to get an emergency root canal on Friday. Yay. Day 55 Ingredients class, and the dreaded mid-term. Other than the fact that I think I passed, I have no idea how I did. I did well on the multiple choice (I <3 multiple choice!) and short answer questions (I think), but there was a bit of a curveball in one section with hop analysis that could go either way. I could look it up to check, but am …

Day 38

Intro to brewing started the day, and we had two guest lecturers from Lallemand Yeasts. I find the little creatures fascinating. Alas, I could only stay for the first, more clinical, presentation as I had to dash to an appointment. I hope that both presentations will be uploaded to Blackboard so I can at least read what I missed. And then on to our first mid-term in Sensory Evaluation. I am trying to stay calm and remember that the desired outcome of going back to school is learning, not marks, but I find myself slipping every once in a while …

Days 23 & 24

Was is the lack of sleep? The overindulgence in bad food and candy (which might account for the lack of sleep)? The stress of over- booking an up to now very disorganized life? A slight hormonal imbalance? What ever the cause, Thursday and Friday were not good days. The phrase, what the fuck am I doing here? drifted across my mind a few times. I think what it comes down to …

Day 17

I had every intention of going to the brewery early to help out before my classes; alas, someone forgot to set her alarm the night before. So I showed up to school bright and early at 11-ish, just in time for Intro to Brewing at 11:30. We had Michael Pugh come in from EcoLab to give us a presentation on the chemicals used in the brewery and appropriate safety procedures for transporting and using them. Pretty straight-forward if you have any common sense at all. There was a short online true/false test after that most of us did right after …

Day 10

I didn’t have to go to Intro to Brewing as they were going over SmartServe certification, which I already have. Instead, I put some insoles in my rubber boots (my feet went aaahh) and went to the brewery to see if there was anything I could do there. Bottling. Bottling was what I could do there. From keg to bottles to box in several easy steps Grab a box of new bottles off the skid. Find out immediately that they are upside down and the tops are not sealed. First one was dodgy, but I didn’t drop any. Take ’em …
